Man Utd player ratings vs Newcastle: Dreadful Diogo Dalot and awful Antony sum up catastrophic Carabao Cup exit as Erik ten Hag faces more difficult questions

The Red Devils suffered a second successive 3-0 home defeat as their woeful start to the season continued at Old Trafford

Manchester United's misery shows no sign of relenting as their defence of the Carabao Cup ended in embarrassing fashion in Wednesday's 3-0 home loss to Newcastle. Eddie Howe's side got revenge for their defeat in the final of last season's competition, and piled more pressure on Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout.

Ten Hag made seven changes from Sunday's loss to Manchester City, but those who came into the team failed to step up, and his side fell behind midway through the first half when Miguel Almiron stole in down the left to steer a shot home after Tino Livramento had carried the ball forward 50 yards.

The Magpies were 2-0 up before the break as Lewis Hall volleyed in from the edge of the box after a cross was cleared into his path, and Ten Hag responded by making two half-time substitutions. That seemed to spark something in the Red Devils, but they were hit by a sucker punch as Joe Willock fired home a fine finish on the hour mark.

From there, it was a tame exit for the holders, and time is starting to run out for their manager after yet another damaging defeat.

GOAL rates United's players from Old Trafford…

Andre Onana (6/10):

Not at fault for any of the goals. Tried to play out when he could.

Diogo Dalot (2/10):

Caught napping as Almiron got in behind him for the first goal, and then lost the ball in a dangerous position for the second. Deservedly hooked at half-time.

Victor Lindelof (5/10):

Sloppy in possession at times, but others were far more to blame for this latest debacle.

Harry Maguire (5/10):

Weak clearing header fell at Hall's feet for the Newcastle second. Did look to move the ball forward when in possession, though not always with success.

Sergio Reguilon (5/10):

Caught out of possession for the first goal and offered little going forward.

Hannibal Mejbri (4/10):

Can't fault his effort, but lets his determination to succeed get the better of him. Lucky not to be sent off inside 20 minutes, and needs to avoid that kind of recklessness.

Casemiro (3/10):

Looked off the pace on his return from injury. Picked up an early booking before being replaced at the break.

Mason Mount (4/10):

Beaten far too easily by Livramento in the build-up to the first goal and not incisive enough in possession. Had a couple of decent moments in the final third, but still not offering enough given the price United paid to sign him.

Antony (2/10):

Gave the ball away almost every time he got it as he wasted some good positions down the right. Didn't help out Dalot defensively, either.

Anthony Martial (4/10):

Pressed well early on but didn't do enough with the ball. Seemed to duck under at least one cross when well placed to test Dubravka.

Alejandro Garnacho (5/10):

Looked bright but lost out to Livramento on far too many occasions to create anything of note.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (6/10):

Returned from injury at half-time and looked solid enough.

Sofyan Amrabat (4/10):

Barely an upgrade on Casemiro in midfield. Booked late on.

Marcus Rashford (5/10):

Thrown on with the score at 3-0 and was unable to conjure anything of note.

Rasmus Hojlund (6/10):

On a hiding to nothing and didn't get the service he needed to get his side back into it.

Bruno Fernandes (4/10):

Missed what was probably United's best chance and didn't look overly interested throughout his time on the pitch.

Erik ten Hag (2/10):

Can't be blamed for rotating given league form and needing to rest his regulars, but the fact he couldn't lift his fringe players and encourage them to put in a performance was telling. His grip on the United job continues to loosen.
