In the latest episode of The Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red podcast (March 3), Sport Audience Editor and regular contributor Joe Rimmer has tipped Reds boss Jurgen Klopp to sell Dejan Lovren this summer.
What did he say?
Well, the members of The Liverpool Echo team were discussing the Croatia international following his less than convincing display in the 3-0 defeat against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday, which brought their unbeaten Premier League season to an end.
Rimmer said (30:15): “I think what’s important for Klopp is he’s going to defend Lovren, and he’s probably going to sell him in the summer. You don’t go out without spending a fair bit of money for a defender of Lovren’s quality and experience for cheap.
“Liverpool will probably have to gamble on an older player, who they can perhaps get for cheaper at the end of their career, or a younger player and hope that they push on.”

Likely to happen?
It may well do.
While Klopp came out and backed his player after the loss, saying “if anyone blamed Dejan Lovren for our defeat I cannot help these people”, as per BBC Sport.
No clues: Can you name the season these iconic Liverpool images belong to?
Despite that, Lovren’s contract runs out in 2021 and despite being picked ahead of Joel Matip against the Hornets at the weekend, it appears that in general he is behind both Joe Gomez and Joel Matip in the pecking order to partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the backline.
Indeed, his previous top-flight start came against Bournemouth at the beginning of December, and he had been an unused substitute in their previous four Premier League fixtures following his return from the injury he picked up at the Vitality Stadium.
We will have to see if Rimmer’s prediction comes true.
