WCOC Press Release12-Mar-2003Two cricket legends, Sir Garfield Sobers of the West Indies and Graeme Pollock of South Africa, will hand over the major individual awards at the presentation ceremony following the ICC Cricket World Cup Final in Johannesburg on March 23.Gary Sobers will present the Man of the Tournament award – a gold trophy worth R500,000 – and Graeme Pollock will hand over a special gold watch to the Man of the Match. Both awards have been produced and donated by the Gold Mining Industry of South Africa.Dr Ali Bacher, Executive Director of CWC 2003, said today: “There is no question that Gary and Graeme are the two greatest left-hand batsmen the game has seen. There is also no debate that Gary Sobers is the greatest allrounder of all time. It will be an honour therefore to have two truly greats of the game on the podium after the Final.”The Man of the Tournament is decided according to a points system that has run from the first match of CWC 2003. Each Man of the Match receives 3 points and the two players in closest contention in each match earn 2 and 1 points respectively. For each match, the adjudicator is the Match Referee. The Man of the Tournament is the player with the highest aggregate of points. At this stage, the top 3 on the list are India’s Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, and Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Vaas.An updated table of contenders will be released on completion of the Super Six round.
